Pietro De Luca Pietro De Luca

The birth of the myth

Pietro De Luca was born in Valmareno di Follina (TV), at the foot of the Venetian Prealps, on August 22, 1893. Alpine soldier of the Val Piave Battalion, 268th Company, he was among the protagonists of the fighting on the top of Monte Paterno/Paternkofel on the 4th of July, 1915 that led to the death of Sepp Innerkofler. In the following months, the myth of the alpino who killed Innerkofler was born, in some versions in hand-to-hand combat, in others with a huge boulder – an image that was often featured in the newspapers of the time.1See Berti, Guerra in Ampezzo e Cadore, pp. 154-162; Pozzato amd Volpato, Guerra sulle Tre Cime e Dolomiti di Sesto, pp. 31-40; Kübler and Reider, Kampf um die Drei Zinnen, pp. 46-47. The Italian military documents from July 1915, in reality, do not shed light, in an incontrovertible way, on the causes of death of the famous mountain guide of Sesto/Sexten, so often discussed. In any case, the documents describe De Luca as one of the bravest members of the patrol of Corporal Da Rin, who defended the summit; in fact, a few days after the events of Paterno/Paternkofel, the alpino was awarded the bronze medal with the following description: “He showed boldness and courage in combat. Hit hard enough, he did not want anyone to accompany him, so as not to remove a defender from the front. Monte Paterno, 4 July 1915”.2Il Fronte Dolomitico, "Pietro De Luca". After the war, in 1922, he decided to leave the country and moved with his wife and children first to France, then to South America. He died in 1973 in Montevideo, Uruguay.
