Written in the Landscape 2022
The video provides an insight into the archaeological survey campaign that was conducted from July to September 2021 as part of the research project “Written in the Landscape: Places, Traces, Memories. The First World War in the Sexten Dolomites.” The documentation of the visible remains of the First World War in the combat area “Zinnenhochfläche/Altopiano delle Tre Cime” was carried out using differential GPS cameras, drones, and 360° panoramas. In order to map the structures, over 10,000 situational photographs were taken and 37,000 GPS points were measured. 150 drone flights were conducted as the basis for photogrammetric reconstructions, and 180 three-dimensional images of the terrain (including underground structures such as caverns and tunnels) and over 500 3D panoramas were created. The work was carried out by archaeologists Rupert Gietl (Arc-Team) and Gianluca Fondriest, researcher in the project of Platform Cultural Heritage and Cultural Production at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano.
Voices of Remembrance: The First World War in Sexten
Voices of Remembrance: The First World War in Sexten is a film directed by Rudy Kaneider and curated by the Platform Cultural Heritage and Cultural Production at the Free University of Bozen. It features interviews with descendants of residents of Sexten who experienced the First World War firsthand. The interviewees share stories about the war’s impact on the area, the evacuation, the return of the population, and reflect on the act of remembering and on concealment.
Additionally, the film addresses the importance of preserving the tangible traces of the war in the landscape and in museum structures. Accompanied by historical photographs, the film conveys memories and deepens the understanding of Sexten’s history and the traces left by the war on subsequent generations.
The video has been realized in two versions in Italian and German language.
